University Overview

Established in 1986 by POSCO (one of the world's leading steel manufacturers), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) is a top-tier private research university dedicated to science and technology education. Despite its short history, POSTECH has consistently ranked among the top universities in Asia and worldwide.

Located in the coastal city of Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, POSTECH operates with a boutique, elite-oriented educational model. With an exceptionally low student-to-faculty ratio, the university offers intimate classroom settings, unparalleled research opportunities, and comprehensive funding structures designed to nurture global leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Academic Excellence & English-Bilingual Campus

POSTECH is globally recognized for its rigorous curriculum and cutting-edge research outputs. To facilitate global integration, POSTECH officially declared itself a bilingual campus.

  • English-Instructed Courses: Nearly all graduate courses and a massive portion of upper-level undergraduate major classes are taught in English.
  • Small Class Sizes: The university maintains a strict limit on the number of admitted students, ensuring that professors can mentor students on an individual basis.
  • World-Class Infrastructure: It is home to the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), which houses a 3rd-generation and 4th-generation synchrotron radiation facility. This infrastructure draws scientists from all over the world.

Admission Guidelines for International Students

Because of its elite reputation, admission to POSTECH is extremely competitive. International applicants must demonstrate stellar academic performance, especially in science and math disciplines.

Application Requirements

  1. Academic Transcript & Diplomas: High school transcripts for undergraduate applicants; bachelor/master degrees for graduate candidates.
  2. Proof of Language Proficiency: POSTECH requires high English proficiency. Acceptable tests include TOEFL iBT, IELTS, or TEPS. Korean proficiency (TOPIK) is highly recommended for daily integration but is not mandatory for admission to most English-taught programs.
  3. Recommendation Letters: Strong recommendations from academic advisors or math/science teachers.
  4. Personal Statement & Study Plan: A detailed account of your academic goals, research interests, and future trajectory.

Tuition, Scholarships, and Financial Support

POSTECH offers some of the most generous financial aid packages in South Korea. While the nominal tuition is highly subsidized compared to US or European research institutions, many international students pay very little out-of-pocket.

  • Undergraduate Scholarships: The POSTECH Jigyeong Scholarship and other merit-based awards can cover full tuition and provide a monthly living allowance.
  • Graduate Assistantships: Most international graduate students are fully funded. Tuition is typically waived, and students receive living stipends through research assistantships (RA) and teaching assistantships (TA) funded by government projects and industry collaborations.

Student Life & Campus Housing

Accommodation

On-campus housing is guaranteed for all international students. POSTECH offers modern dormitories equipped with high-speed internet, laundry facilities, study lounges, and gym access.

  • DICE (Dormitory for International Cultural Exchange): A designated residential space where Korean and international students live together to foster cultural exchange.

Support Systems

  • International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS): This dedicated office handles visa matters, alien registration, health insurance, and cultural excursions.
  • Buddy Program: New international students are matched with local POSTECH students to ease their transition into life in South Korea.

Living in Pohang

Pohang is a vibrant, industrial, and coastal city located in Gyeongsangbuk-do. While it is quieter than Seoul, it offers a peaceful, focused environment perfect for concentrated research and study.

  • Scenic Beaches: Students can easily enjoy scenic spots like Bukbu (Yeongildae) Beach and Wolpo Beach.
  • Transportation: The city is well-connected to other parts of Korea via KTX (bullet train), making a weekend trip to Seoul (approx. 2.5 hours) or nearby historical Gyeongju (approx. 30 minutes) highly accessible.
  • Cost of Living: Living expenses in Pohang are significantly lower than in Seoul, making it highly economical for international students.
