University Overview

Established in 1992 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts) is South Korea’s leading national conservatory. Unlike traditional comprehensive universities, K-Arts is a highly specialized institution solely dedicated to nurturing elite artists across various disciplines. It is widely considered the most prestigious arts school in Korea, boasting alumni who regularly win top awards at international film festivals, classical music competitions, and global dance events.

With around 3,000 students in total, the learning environment is extremely intimate. The student-to-faculty ratio is exceptionally low, allowing for personalized mentorship, masterclasses, and rigorous practical training. The university operates two main campuses in Seoul: the Seokgwan Campus (housing Drama, Film, Visual Arts, and Traditional Arts) and the Seocho Campus (housing Music and Dance, situated right next to the Seoul Arts Center).

Academic Schools and Departments

K-Arts is divided into six specialized schools, each operating like an independent academy:

1. School of Music: Offers programs in Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Composition, Conducting, and Musicology. Located at the Seocho Campus, it features world-class concert halls and practice rooms.
2. School of Drama: Encompasses Acting, Directing, Playwriting, Stage Design, and Theatre Studies. This school has produced some of South Korea's most famous actors and directors.
3. School of Film, TV & Multimedia: Covers Filmmaking, Broadcasting, Multimedia, and Animation. It provides industry-grade studio spaces, editing suites, and screening rooms.
4. School of Dance: Offers tracks in Dance Performance (Ballet, Modern, and Traditional), Choreography, and Dance Theory.
5. School of Visual Arts: Divided into Fine Art, Design, Architecture, and Art Theory. It emphasizes conceptual creativity alongside classical techniques.
6. School of Korean Traditional Arts: Dedicated to preserving and modernizing Korean traditions through Korean Traditional Music, Dance, Folk Arts, and Theory.

Admissions and Language Requirements

Admissions at K-Arts are highly competitive, characterized by intense practical examinations, portfolio reviews, and interviews.

• Language Requirements: Strong proficiency in Korean is essential for almost all majors, as classes and critiques are conducted in Korean. Applicants generally must submit a TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) score. While the minimum requirement is typically TOPIK Level 3 or 4, certain departments (such as Drama, Writing, and Art Theory) expect a Level 5 or 6 due to the highly textual nature of the curriculum.
• Practical Exams & Portfolios: International applicants must submit extensive portfolios, video recordings of performances, or participate in on-site/online auditions depending on the department's requirements.

Global Scholarship Program: AMA+

The Art Major Asian plus (AMA+) Scholarship is K-Arts’ flagship program designed specifically for international students from developing countries (ODA recipient countries). This highly competitive scholarship is fully funded by the Korean government and covers:

• Full tuition for undergraduate or graduate degrees.
• Airfare (round-trip economy class).
• Monthly living allowance (approx. 800,000 KRW per month).
• 4-month intensive Korean language training before the regular semester begins.
• Medical insurance.

Campus Life and Facilities

Because K-Arts functions as a conservatory, student life is intensely focused on creation, rehearsal, and production.

• State-of-the-Art Facilities: K-Arts houses professional-grade theaters, soundproof music studios, black box theaters, motion capture studios, and advanced film post-production suites.
• Seoul Locations: Both campuses offer easy access to Seoul's vibrant cultural scenes. The Seocho Campus is located in southern Seoul, bordering the Seoul Arts Center, giving students direct exposure to classical music and high-end galleries. The Seokgwan Campus, located in northeastern Seoul, offers a historic, community-driven campus vibe close to major university districts like Daehangno (the theater district).
