University Overview
Established in 1971 by the Korean government as the nation's first research-oriented science and engineering institution, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has evolved into one of the world's premier science and technology universities. Often referred to as the 'MIT of South Korea,' KAIST is renowned for its rigorous academic curriculum, cutting-edge research facilities, and highly competitive student body.
Located in Daejeon, the scientific and technological capital of South Korea, KAIST plays a pivotal role in driving the country's technological innovations. For international students aiming to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), KAIST offers an unparalleled academic ecosystem paired with extensive financial and administrative support.
Key Highlights for International Students
1. 100% English-Taught Curriculum
Unlike many other universities in South Korea where only a fraction of classes are offered in English, KAIST has adopted English as the primary medium of instruction. Almost all undergraduate and graduate courses (excluding some specialized humanities or language classes) are taught entirely in English, making it incredibly accessible for global talents.
2. Generous Scholarship Schemes
KAIST is highly committed to attracting top global talent. To facilitate this, the university offers the KAIST International Student Scholarship to admitted international students. This comprehensive scholarship covers:
- Full Tuition Waiver: Covers all 8 semesters of undergraduate study (contingent on maintaining a GPA of 2.7/4.3 or higher).
- Monthly Living Stipend: Approximately 350,000 KRW per month to assist with living expenses.
- National Health Insurance Premium: Covered fully by the university.
3. World-Class Research and Innovation
KAIST consistently ranks in the top 50 universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings and is frequently recognized as one of the most innovative universities in the Asia-Pacific region. Students have the opportunity to collaborate directly with world-class faculty in state-of-the-art laboratories and research centers specializing in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Biotechnology, and Aerospace Engineering.
Academic Structure & Colleges
KAIST operates under a unique system where undergraduate students enter without declaring a major. After their first year of exploring various foundational disciplines, students choose their majors without any quota limitations. This allows students to make informed decisions about their academic and professional paths.
