Hanyang University ERICA (Education-Research Industry Cluster at Ansan) is not a satellite classroom of the Seoul campus — it is a fully independent admissions unit with its own entrance scores, its own colleges, and its own degree conferral under the name "Hanyang University ERICA Campus." International applicants apply directly to ERICA; they are not assigned there after failing to enter the Seoul campus, and transferring between the two campuses after enrollment is difficult and rare. The campus sits in Sangnok-gu, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, about 40 km southwest of central Seoul, inside the Banwol-Sihwa industrial belt that has anchored the region's electronics and precision-manufacturing economy since the late 1970s. The nearest station is Hanyang University Station (한대앞역) on the Suin-Bundang Line, a short walk from the main gate. Reaching central Seoul (Gangnam or Wangsimni) typically takes 70-90 minutes door to door, a commute that pushes most students — Korean and international alike — toward on-campus or nearby dorms rather than daily travel.

Colleges Built Around the Industrial Cluster, Not a General Curriculum

ERICA's college structure reflects its origin as an industry-linked campus rather than a scaled-down liberal arts university. Engineering, Software Convergence, and Science and Technology Convergence make up the largest share of enrollment, feeding directly into nearby employers in semiconductors, automotive parts, and precision machinery. Design operates on a studio model closer to an art-and-design school than a standard engineering-adjacent department, and Global Business is the college most set up for English-medium coursework and exchange students.

What It Actually Costs: Tuition by College

South Korea abolished the one-time 입학금 (admission fee) in a phased rollout completed by 2023, so ERICA — like all Korean universities — no longer charges it. Annual tuition is billed per semester and varies by college, with engineering and design running noticeably higher than humanities-adjacent tracks such as Global Business, because of lab, studio, and equipment fees layered on top of the base rate.

Who Actually Enrolls: The International Student Profile

ERICA's international population is smaller and more concentrated than at the Seoul campus — an estimated 1,000-1,200 students, weighted toward Global Business, Software Convergence, and graduate programs in engineering. Korean-medium instruction dominates undergraduate coursework outside Global Business, so most degree-seeking applicants are expected to hold TOPIK level 3 at minimum for admission and level 4 by graduation for smoother upper-year coursework; a handful of English-track seats exist in Engineering and Global Business but are limited and competitive. Students coming in with weaker Korean typically spend a semester or a full year in a university-affiliated Korean language program before starting major coursework, which most applicants underestimate when planning their arrival timeline.

Living in Sangnok-gu: Cheaper Rent, a Real Commute

Ansan is a working-class satellite city, not a university town in the Sinchon or Hongdae sense, and rent reflects that: a one-room studio (원룸) near campus runs well below equivalent options near Seoul's major private universities, and on-campus dorms — while limited in seats relative to demand — are priced accordingly low. The tradeoff is distance from Seoul's job fairs, internship interviews, and social scene; students who want both cheap housing and easy Seoul access often end up splitting time or accepting the 70-90 minute Suin-Bundang Line ride as a routine part of student life, particularly in the second half of a degree when internships pull toward the city.

Paperwork Specific to a Branch-Campus Admission Letter

Because ERICA issues its own standardized certificate of admission (표준입학허가서), the D-2 student visa application must reference the ERICA campus address and college by name — an admission letter or supporting document that only says "Hanyang University" without the ERICA designation can trigger delays at the Korean consulate or embassy. Applicants should double-check that every visa-relevant document (admission certificate, tuition payment receipt, financial proof) consistently states the ERICA campus, since Seoul-campus and ERICA-campus paperwork are processed under different institutional codes even though both carry the Hanyang University name.
