School Overview

Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), established in 1398 during the Joseon Dynasty, is the oldest university in East Asia. The Sungkyunkwan University Korean Language Center (KLC) builds upon this rich academic heritage by offering premier, highly structured Korean language programs for international students. Situated in the heart of Seoul at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in Jongno, the KLC provides an intellectually stimulating environment close to historical landmarks and youth-centric cultural districts like Daehangno.

The Unique 6-Term System

Unlike most Korean language institutes that operate on a standard 4-term (10-week) schedule, SKKU KLC is famous for its 6-Term System:
- Duration: Each term runs for 8 weeks (approximately 2 months).
- Intensity: Classes run for 5 hours per day (200 hours total per term), allowing students to complete a full level faster than the traditional 4-hour, 10-week systems.
- Advantage: Students can complete all 6 levels of Korean proficiency in just one calendar year, making it the ideal choice for those who want to transition rapidly into undergraduate or graduate studies.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum spans from Level 1 (Beginner) to Level 6 (Advanced):
- Levels 1-2 (Beginner): Focuses on basic survival Korean, everyday grammar, pronunciation, and standard daily conversations.
- Levels 3-4 (Intermediate): Transitions to complex expressions, understanding of social issues, and preparing extensively for the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK).
- Levels 5-6 (Advanced): Focuses on academic reading, research writing, debates, and public speaking skills required for university lectures and professional environments.

Campus Life & Facilities

Students at the KLC enjoy full access to SKKU’s historical and modern campus facilities, including:
- Libraries: High-tech study spaces and an extensive collection of digital and physical international resources.
- Global Lounge: A dedicated hub for international students to interact and practice language skills with local Korean students (SKKU buddies).
- Student Cafeterias: Affordable and diverse meal options located directly on campus.

Accommodation

SKKU offers on-campus and off-campus dormitory options (such as Ko-Gwan or affiliate student housings) for international language students. Due to high demand, rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The surrounding Daehangno and Hyehwa neighborhoods also offer abundant private accommodation options, including Goshiwons, studio apartments (One-rooms), and shared housing.
